Part of a Councillor’s duty is to engage with local community groups and recognised Community Councils, who are part of the public governance structure. As a virgin candidate it is proving to be very interesting and information attending the various Community Council meetings in Annandale, and with the communities being so proactive there are a lot of meetings.
I’ve found it particularly useful to hear the input of incumbent councillors and their reports, as it helps to clarify the role and in some cases, boundaries, of what is good practise. Successful election candidates, particularly those who are elected for the first time, require a considerable induction period to take on board the various informations and procedures that come with the responsibility so it wouldn’t be until maybe July 2012 that they would be taking an active role in planning committees, for example.
One planning result of note was the refusal of application for development at Laverockhall, Lochmaben which was good news after prolonged strong local objections to the proposed development.
